Tarawad
Chennai, 2002
The lush, well maintained, Bermuda grass lawn is punctuated by a rough granite stone pathway, a feature that enhances the entrance to the house. The sprawling 5200 sq.ft bungalow is set on a quarter-acre plot, well within the sight of the beach. The house, at first glimpse, makes a definite statement of style.

A "padipurra" or gate house, a typical Kerala structure forms the entrance to the house. The adornment of this entrance by the authentic stone pillars brought from Calicut together with wood, stone and tiles, continues the traditional theme and then it is combined with modern settings. The other special features of the entrance are the gabled roof and the welcoming built-in seat of timber.

The atrium or "nadumittam" is designed with elements drawn from the "nalukettu" principle. It has pillars of wood from Chettinad and the lanterns, diyas and brass "urlis" and "chandana vilakku" flanking the heavy door, also from a temple in Chettinad. All these traditional features contribute to the warmth and charm of this house.

The French doors and many windows give the house an airy and spacious feeling by bringing in enough natural light and ventilation. The characteristics of this house are elegance, comfort and convenience with a natural earthiness. It illustrates how tradition and modernism can blend to result in a comfortable living space.
