Kerala Flood Manual In Malayalam

October 31, 2018 at 6:30:00 PM

The south Indian state of Kerala witnessed one of the worst floods in its history starting on the 8th of August, 2018. Unusual heavy rains during the monsoon season are commonly cited as the primary cause of the shocking calamity. Though the southern-most state was able to manage the highly destructive calamity well, the cost, both tangible and intangible, that the people of the state had to pay was very high.

On many such tragic occasions, housing is one of the most severely affected fields, and several people are left misplaced and homeless. In the wake of the calamity, Benny Kuriakose prepared a handbook or a flood manual (in Malayalam) containing schematic sketches and instructions for the disaster reconstruction work then underway.

The objective of this manual is to assist the owners of the houses and buildings damaged by the floods with the task of retrofitting and rebuilding. There are various cases, where subsequent floods have caused more devastating impacts because the buildings were already damaged by the earlier flood. The manual is expected to give an insight on how to conduct retrofitting of the damaged buildings so that they can resist future disasters as well. It even includes guidelines for the planning of the new buildings to be constructed in flood-prone areas.
