It was after the 26 Jan 2001 earthquake, when an otherwise little known region of Gujarat, the village of Chapredi in Bhuj district, was on the front page of the newspapers. A number of houses in Chapredi had collapsed to rubble. Chapredi was unique with the lively involvement of its villagers in the rebuilding process. From the local earth, cement stabilized earth blocks were made and the houses were built in situ.
