Institute of Palliative Medicine

2003

The Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, is a hospital and training centre for Palliative care that aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Special care is taken to ensure that the patients don’t spend their days staring at the blank ceiling by providing colourful walls with windows that open into the lively courtyards. The windows in the rooms are placed such that one sees nature outside. The hospital design, unlike any other facility, includes verandahs with built-in seats to allow patients to sit outside and enjoy nature.

The roof structure, tiered in response to the design, accommodates the patient wing in a single storey, and the institutional block in two storeys. This makes the elevation interesting from inside and out. Within the hospital building, ramps are available to enable wheelchair accessibility, and bathrooms are large enough for caregivers to assist the infirm. The most crucial element of this hospital design is the use of natural light. The large windows admit natural light that has a curative effect on the interiors. Because the hospital gives free care to all people, there are just a few single and double-sharing rooms set aside for patients who require isolation.
