The Dutch built Paliam Palace in the 17th Century as a gesture of gratitude to the Paliath Achan, for helping them to conquer the Portuguese. This Palace was once used as the residence of the Paliath Achans, who were the prime ministers to the former Maharajas of the State of Kochi.
