FLOODS AGAIN IN VENICE

One of the highest floods in Venice happened last week (187 cm above the sea level) and 90% of the city was flooded. More than 20 million tourists visit Venice every year. The crypt of the St. Marks Basilica was flooded for the second time. The earliest highest flood of 194 cm happened in 1966, followed by 1979, 1986, 2000, 2018 etc. There was a major flood last year also.

Italian Prime Minister has declared an emergency. According to one of the reports by Inter- Governmental Panel on Climate Change, the floods which used to happen once in 100 years will happen once in 6 years by 2050 and once in five months by 2100.

The elaborate flood defence system which started in 2003 is still not completed and it is supposed to be finished at 2021.
