Pulicat, or Pazhaverkadu, a seashore town in the Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu state, demonstrates strong tints of historic vibrancy. The once-vibrant seaside town, built with heritage and trails of Portuguese, Dutch, and English culture, now stands neglected and forgotten.
Along with Xavier Benedict and Kiran M. Keswani, Benny Kuriakose writes about the history of Pulicat and plans out the architectural conservation for the historic town. Pulicat, located at the junction of the Bay of Bengal and the large Pulicat lake, has been visited by Portuguese, Dutch, and English traders, which is clearly visible in the remains of its built heritage. Today, this heritage is in a state of serious neglect and poverty. The aim of this case study, following the UHS course, is to analyse the future perspectives of the heritage at stake. The identified natural, cultural, and social potentials need to be activated—involving the local government and other organizations—in order to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the city and its inhabitants.
