PLANNING BOARD BUILDING

Baker Buildings

There was a time, when the engineers and architects in Kerala failed to recognise the works of Laurie Baker. He was called a quack, he is only a mason, he is not qualified etc. During the inauguration of one of the buildings done by Baker, one of the executive engineers working with the Government said that the building will not last for more than one year. But now, the Baker buildings have survived for more than 40-50 years and still going strong, whereas the badly constructed concrete buildings have been pulled down.

In 1990, when Baker designed the building for the Kerala State Planning Board as per the request of the then Vice Chairman Dr. I S Gulati, the employees objected to his design. The poster in Malayalam says, "If the low cost building collapse and if we die, then vice chairman has no problem." Finally, the Baker design was not executed.
