CTARA Seminar - Sustainable Architecture in Different Perspective

At the Seminar on Sustainable Architecture in Different Perspectives at IIT Bombay, Benny Kuriakose explains how Sustainable Architecture has become very relevant in the recent context of climate change and disasters. He contends that current efforts to promote green buildings are insufficient and that a fundamental shift in architectural practise is required. Using real-world case studies from his work, ranging from small-scale urban initiatives to individual buildings, Dr. Benny Kuriakose contends that modern architecture has to be viewed from a fresh angle.

Benny Kuriakose is most well known for his work on the design of public structures and the relocation of buildings in the Kerala Section of Chennai's Dakshinachitra Craft Village. Important architectural projects include the Anantya Resort in Kanyakumari, the Springdale Heritage Resort in Vandiperiyar, the Institute of Palliative Medicine in Calicut, the Muziris Heritage Project, and the tsunami-affected villages of Chinnangudi and Tharangambadi in Nagapattinam District.

Dr. Kuriakose is one of the editors of the book "Guidelines for the Preparation of a Heritage Management Plan" and the author of "Conserving Timber Structures in India." He was a consultant for various organizations like the UNDP, UNESCO, several state governments, and other institutions.

In order to prevent architectural failure, one must consider the several aspects that it affects. Only then is design really sustainable, and sustainable architecture is the direction we should be going in order to create a better society.
