Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam held a ten-day nationwide webinar course on "Sustainable Building Construction Technologies." On the sixth day of the webinar sessions, Dr. Benny Kuriakose spoke on "Conservation and Sustainability."
He started the video by defining sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and also quoting various other definitions related to sustainable development. He also emphasises that the sustainability of a building can be taken into consideration only if the building can stand more than 35 years.
He says that sustainability has undergone changes over the past years and that one needs to look into it from a different perspective. This architecture includes several aspects, including social, cultural, technological, and political. Giving the structure a grade in order to determine if it is green is highly superficial.
He explains in detail how conservation can lead to development and sustainability and the need for the architecture to be reversible. He also outlines various stages of Chettinad egg plastering and Athangudi tile making. He added the importance of using timber as a sustainable building material and the need for the use of sustainable materials for building conservation.
