Chettinad Style House - Mangala Heritage Home in Outlook Magazine

September 30, 2010 at 6:30:00 PM

Outlook magazine publishes about Benny Kuriakose's conservation project – a traditional Chettinad style house in the small town of Tirupugalur which has been turned into a new homestay- The Mangalam Heritage Home. He assisted in the conservation of the Mangala Heritage Home along the lines of vernacular architecture, thereby imparting a distinct Tamil character. It is a consciously pure idea. The Mangala Heritage Home stands on a bend in a minor road between Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam town.

It has the benefit of impeccable design inputs from cultural heavyweight Shanta Guhan and the designer Benny Kuriakose, whose work is most familiar to us from Dakshinachitra. From the symmetrical pillared verandah in the front to the enclosed porch at the back, the spaces at Mangala alternate between cool interiors and sun-drenched courtyards. From the deep, stepped porch at the back of the house, there are vies of the temple’s vast tank and nothing in between but a narrow sandy path.
