This manual on planning school buildings has been prepared for the teachers, students, parents, engineers, and others who are involved in the reorganisation of existing schools. Classrooms, libraries, laboratories, playgrounds, etc. are crucial elements of a child’s growth in learning and creating future citizens of society. The guidelines in the manual emphasise good design, quality, safety, cost, and effectiveness in innovations in educational pedagogy.

The team has tried to give the basic logic behind many of the planning exercises, and the "whys" are important to ensure that the renovation and construction of the buildings happen with a better perspective than in the manual. The valuable experience in the various facets is covered in the manual to make them available to a wider public, and it should not remain only in the memories of the individuals who worked on these projects. The basis for much of the information for the manual was the involvement of a team in the design and reorganisation of some of the schools in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The manual discusses in detail the afore-given of school design aspects in detail, which can help add value to all schools and improve the learning experiences of the children.
