A beach house located in the outskirts of Chennai, Casa Rojo is a cost-effective and eco-friendly building that stands amid an old fruit orchard. The team designed the proposal by keeping the existing orchard in mind, which guided us through the process. The developed strategy responds to the climatic conditions of Chennai, whose blazing heat is relieved by a series of double-layered Mangalore tiled roofs. A concrete tank that transformed into a lily pond evokes a serene ambience within the space. A parapet wall constructed along the periphery of the concrete slab accommodates a sloping tiled roof, that also makes room for an attic. These passive design strategies lead to the decreased use of artificial ventilation and in turn, reduces the carbon footprint of the building.
