Retirement homes are an integral part of the society’s inclusive approach to design. Tharian House, located in a small village in Ernakulam district, Kerala, is one such project that strives to rethink the psychological and physical aspects of retirement home design. The team planned the orientation of the house to face the green fields, unlike the customary practice of the verandah overlooking the road. This entails a tranquil atmosphere within the space and obstructs the acoustic intervention of the busy road adjacent to it. The roofs and interiors were executed with the help of local carpentry skills, who utilized recycled materials in the construction. The intricately carved stone pillars were made by stone craftsmen from Kanyakumari.
